Parish Council Minutes

May 21, 2018


Members present were Dan Sweet, Darren Klein, Teresa Drake, Tom Munchel, Dave Holwager, Wayne Hokey, Amy Engle and Debbie Weiss. Others in attendance were Father John, Barb Ringwald and Vicki Sheipe.  Absent:  Janet Sweet and Debbie Magiera.

Father John opened the meeting with prayer.

Dave Holwager made a motion with Teresa Drake seconding that the minutes from the April 16, 2018 meeting be approved. Motion passed.

Darren Klein gave the finance report. He reported that the Finance Committee will be working to try and simplify the budget categories.

Approval of April 2018 Finance Report: Teresa Drake made a motion with Debbie Weiss seconding Motion passed to approve.

Status of 2018 – 2019 Budget – Dave Holwager made a motion with Wayne Hokey seconding to approve this budget. Motion passed. There are some addition totals that need to be fixed, Barb will do this and resend a copy of the annual budget. NOTE: the kitchen remodel is earmarked in this budget. It was also noted that our fiscal year is July 1 to June 30 and this was established by the Archdiocese. It was also reported that the finance committee will begin meeting quarterly to stay on top of the budget. This meeting will be separate from the Parish Council meeting night, to allow enough time to work on the budget without being on a time crunch.


Barb reported that the east and west side of the parking lot security lights have been converted to LED. Power washing of oven air vents and spots on the outside of the buildings is done. The hand rails at the altar have been secured and the landscaping is done. We do need to decide on an alternative for putting down mulch – the Archdiocese has stated that they no longer want this used due to termites and it holding moisture up against the buildings. Options suggested were rock, gravel or crumbled (shredded) tires.

The question came up as to when the bricks had been sealed. Amy Engle found this in previous minutes it was done in 2014.



Father John Luerman Scholarship – There are three recipients this year – Chase Hokey, Elizabeth Spalding and Trey Klein. Dave Holwager made a motion with Tom Munchel seconding that the scholarship be split three ways. Motion passed.   

Request for 100.00 to 200.00 to go to adult meals at the Summer Lunch Program – Amy Engle:  The summer lunch program is for toddlers and children through age 18.  The State of Indiana reimburses for the children’s lunches but not the adults. Debbie Weiss made a motion with Darren Klein seconding that we donate 200.00 to the lunch program. Motion passed.   

The remodeling of the kitchen was discussed.  $ 13,400.00 has been earmarked in the 2018/2019 budget for this remodel. Teresa Drake reported that the estimate for the cabinets was ready. Barb will talk to Jon Turpin about electric work that needs to be done. They would like for this project to be done before Canal Days. It was discussed donating the steam table instead of scrapping it – it would have to be picked up and there would be no cost to us to do this. Barb and Teresa will be working on finalizing this project and will have figures for the next meeting.

When discussing sealing the parking lot, Tom Munchel felt that the parking lot may need more than just a seal, due to many large cracks. Dan Sweet will talk to Powell Paving about this.

A nominating committee will be established at the next meeting for the upcoming council elections.


Father John discussed budget issues at greater length. He reported that we are approximately 11,000.00 in the red. (ordinary expenses) He reemphasized that we can only use the interest from the endowment never the principal. The goal IS for ordinary expenses be paid from contributions and ordinary income, NOT the ADLF interest. Father said that he would address the Parish maybe towards the end of June. He also stated that 65% of our budget is labor expenses, which we have no control over. He also announced that the finance committee is looking at meeting quarterly and on a different Monday that the council meets to have more time to review the budget. We do not want to be dependent on the endowment to keep the doors open.

Father John also explained what he would be discussing at the June 4 Explanatory Mass.


June 4 – Explanatory Mass 5:00 p.m.

June 9 – Blood Drive at St. Elizabeth 8:30 to 11:30

June 23 – Atkinson wedding at 2 p.m.

Date of the next Parish Council Meeting is Monday July 2, 2018 at 6:30 p.m. There is no council meeting in June.

Date of the next Finance Committee Meeting is Monday August 6, 2018 at 6:30 p.m.
